12 Tips for New Supervisors

Are you new to the field of management? Are you feeling overwhelmed with all the administrative tasks and other duties? In this blog, I will share with you some tips for supervisors and managers who are new to their position.

  1. Read the licensing manual – Highlight the important stuff and take notes as needed. Complete the online test on the CCLS website.  
  2. Find a mentor or support group – It is a great way to learn new things and lean on for support when needed.
  3. Attend workshops and networking meetings – This is another excellent way to connect with other centers and further enhance your knowledge.
  4. Be ready for changes at the workplace – Remember, change is inevitable. It is scary, but it is for the better. You may lose staff or parents during the change process, but it is all worth the effort if the change has a positive outcome.
  5. Organize your policy binder appropriately – Policies and procedures are a huge part of any workplace as they outline the guidelines and define how the organization operates.   
  6. Create a daily schedule for yourself – A daily schedule will help you organize yourself and keep you on track to complete your daily tasks. The program should also be flexible at the same time to accommodate unforeseen circumstances.  
  7. Build relationships with staff and families – Spend time with them to build trust and understanding. Get to know the strengths and challenges that they may be facing. Provide support as needed.
  8. Set boundaries for yourself – Create a healthy work-life balance for yourself. Understand when your mental health is compromised and when you must delegate tasks to other staff.  
  9. Go on a vacation without feeling guilty about missing work – You deserve to take time off work and unwind. Delegate your tasks to someone who is filling in for you. Turn off everything work-related and focus on yourself.
  10. Make mistakes and learn from them – Always reflect on your daily work. Make notes on how to improve your work in the future.
  11. Always ask questions – Whenever in doubt, ask questions to understand better. It will also eliminate tasks that you are doing without any purpose.
  12. Reflect on why you chose to come in the leadership position – At the end of the day, reflect on your reason for selecting this field and your current job. Think about what you want to leave behind for other educators to follow.
